The Multiple Benefits of Watershed Protection Spring is finally here in the Upper Delaware River region. After a protracted winter, early May brought us heavy rains that remind us how important our work is to protect our watershed and the people and communities who live there. As much as we think of watershed protection and restoration in terms of water quality, habitat enhancement, and recreational activities, it’s just as important to remember how our watershed project efforts also address other critical needs of local governments and residents of the UDR region. Of paramount importance to all local governments is the dangerous impacts of flooding and protection of critical public infrastructure. Stream restoration projects initiated by our Network partners such as bank stabilization and floodplain reconnection often result in slowing down stormwater runoff which helps mitigate flooding and sediment loss. They also help protect public infrastructure and prevent expensive repair needs for bridges, roads, and culverts. Thanks to the many local governments who are actively engaged with the Network as we work in partnership and collaboration to generate the resources necessary to effectively manage our water resource management needs throughout the UDR watershed!
